Appointment to PHA Board
Earlier this month I accepted a position on the board of directors of Physician Hospitals of America (PHA). PHA is a national organization that offers support, advocacy and educational services to the physician-owned hospital industry, reflecting at all times the best interests of the patients, physicians, and other specialty providers who play an essential role in the provision of health care services. By August 2010, PHA anticipates there will be more than 265 existing physician-owned facilities in operation and about 70 under development.
Physician-owned hospitals employ highly trained staff and offer a reduced patient-to-nurse ratio to administer high quality care in a convenient, patient-focused setting. Physician-owned hospitals have fewer complications, reduced rates of infection and shorter stays, all of which lead to lower costs and improved patient outcomes.
PHA is currently in the process of fighting to keep more than 220 hospitals in existence and 100 more in development so they can continue providing high quality care to the communities they serve.
I look forward to working with PHA to determine ways in which we can continue to improve healthcare for physicians and their patients. With the healthcare reform bill proposing the elimination of physician-owned hospitals, it is a critical time to let the public know about the benefits that physician-owned hospitals deliver to patients and their families across the nation. During my three year term on the board I plan to leverage my knowledge of the physician owned hospital industry to help advocate on behalf of these facilities.
