Surgery Center of Reno Performs Partial Knee Replacements

Over time modern medical practices become less invasive, more efficient and produce highly successful results. We are thrilled to report that breakthrough medical procedures are being performed at our centers. Doctors at the Surgery Center of Reno (SCOR) in Reno, Nevada perform partial knee replacements in excess of 50 cases a month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 500,000 total knee replacement surgeries are performed in the United States each year. About 40 percent of these cases could benefit from having a partial knee replacement as opposed to a total knee replacement. This minimally invasive procedure requires a smaller incision and offers a faster recovery than traditional total joint replacement surgery.

In order to ensure high-quality results, the physician partners at SCOR invested a significant amount of capital in 2008 to provide their orthopedic surgeons with the best equipment to successfully execute a partial knee replacement surgery.

The total supply cost for these cases averages $6,300. The Medicare reimbursement for CPT code 27446 is $11,094.27, and billed charges to insurance companies (Health Plan of Nevada and PPO/POS) are $18,643.00.

Currently there are three manufacturers for the partial knee replacement implants and accessories. SCOR selected Biomet’s Oxford® to use at the facility. Prior to using the product, Biomet requires that surgeons attend a two-day training session. The training session, staffed by the Oxford University surgeons who designed the product as well as faculty in the United States, teaches surgeons how to use Oxford® Partial Knee surgical techniques through practical hands on experience utilizing their patented instrumentation system. In addition to the surgeons, SCOR sent the OR manager, a circulator, and a scrub tech to the training to ensure that the entire surgical team is familiar with the procedure.
