Regent Offers an Environmentally Preferred Purchasing Program

The sustainable movement is upon us, and while our first priority is to offer each patient quality care, we also need to remain aware of our environmental responsibilities. Initially, environmental stewardship can seem confusing and costly for hospitals and surgery centers, particularly regarding purchasing. To help reduce the confusion and costs of going green, Regent offers access to a flash tool to help our partners implement environmentally preferable purchasing practices.

Regent’s Environmentally Preferred Purchasing (EPP) spans all functional areas of a facility. When considering the purchasing options available, we look beyond the supply and assess the environmental impact of the product. We review how the product is manufactured, transported and disposed of.

In addition to a positive impact on the environment, purchasing environmentally preferred products can have a significant impact on your bottom line. Energy efficiency and waste disposal are two major factors that affect overall operating costs but are often overlooked during the evaluation of the initial purchase. Regent can help you identify these long-term cost factors so you can make more informed decisions for your facility and ultimately save money.

To help our partners purchase supplies that are environmentally friendly, we offer resources such as:
• EPP Readiness Checklists
• Environmentally Preferred Products
• Building and Renovation Opportunities
• Long-term Planning
• Web Resources

If you are just beginning to green your facility, the task may seem daunting. Select easy projects first and gradually work your way into other areas of your facility to implement more robust EPP practices. The EPP flash tool provides information and resources to assist your facility if you are just beginning to implement your green programs, including templates to assist in assembling internal cross-function teams and outlines of activities to assist in garnering internal support.

As a part of another green initiative, Regent partnered with Medisiss, a registered Third-Party Medical Device Reprocessor of Single-Use Devices (SUDs), in 2008. Currently 12 of our facilities are reprocessing a variety of single-use devices, keeping those reprocessed items out of landfills in the form of medical waste, and resulting in an overall cost savings of $150,000.

We understand that in order to offer quality care, certain products are required and must follow strict guidelines. However, with due diligence, strategic planning and a strong commitment to our patients and the environment, we can make a positive impact on both.
