Tom Mallon, CEO of Regent Surgical Health, Appointed to the Board of Physician Hospitals of America
Mallon to Advocate for High Quality Care in Physician-Owned Hospitals
Westchester, IL (January 4, 2010) — Regent Surgical Health, a leading developer of surgery centers and physician-owned hospitals across the country, announced today that CEO and Founder Tom Mallon has been appointed to the board of directors of Physician Hospitals of America (PHA) — a trade association that offers support, advocacy and education services to physician-owned hospitals across the country.
Mallon was appointed to serve a three-year term and will help advocate on behalf of physician ownership of hospitals.
“I look forward to working with PHA to determine ways in which we can continue to improve healthcare for physicians and their patients,” Mallon said. “With the healthcare reform bill proposing the elimination of physician-owned hospitals, it is a critical time to let the public know about the benefits that physician-owned hospitals deliver to patients and their families across the nation.”
Physician-owned hospitals employ highly trained staff and offer a reduced patient-to-nurse ratio to administer high quality care in a convenient, patient-focused setting. Physician-owned hospitals have fewer complications, reduced rates of infection and shorter stays, all of which lead to lower costs and improved patient outcomes.
“We’re happy to have Tom on board and think that he will serve as an asset in a variety of ways based on his extensive background working with physician-owned facilities,” said Molly Sandvig, executive director of Physician Hospitals of America. “We’re in the process of fighting to keep more than 220 hospitals in existence and 100 more in development so they can continue providing high quality care to the communities they serve.”
Physician Hospitals of America is a national organization that offers support, advocacy and educational services to the physician-owned hospital industry, reflecting at all times the best interests of the patients, physicians, and other specialty providers who play an essential role in the provision of health care services. By August 2010, PHA anticipates there will be more than 265 existing physician-owned facilities in operation and about 70 under development.
Mallon started Regent Surgical Health in 2001. Regent has ownership in two physician-owned hospitals, The Medical Center at Elizabeth Place in Dayton, Ohio, and The Surgical Hospital of Munster in Munster, Indiana.
Mallon specializes in working with physician and hospital partners in the development, management and turnaround of surgery centers and specialty hospitals around the country. He also has extensive experience in venture capital funds, turnarounds and physician recruitment.
